IGF signaling in the placenta. IGF regulates cell proliferation and survival in placenta cells through several mechanisms. Both IGF-1 and IGF-2 bind to the IGF-1R to stimulate the MEK/ERK pathway and the PI3K pathway to promote cell proliferation and evasion of apoptosis. Additionally, downregulation of p53 leads to higher levels of IGF’s allowing for more proliferation and cell survival
