Effects of elevated levels of saturated FAs on oocytes: Elevated levels of saturated fatty acids induce ER stress due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER lumen, which induces the ER transmembrane signaling proteins PERK, IRE-1 and ATF-6. Induction of C/EBP homology protein (CHOP) via ATF-4 produces excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) which leads to impaired mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and to the release of stored intracellular calcium ions from the ER lumen into the cytosol, eventually initiating a downstream apoptotic cascade. All these events lead to impaired oocyte maturation and developmental competence
