Early Placental Development. The progenitor cells of the placenta, the cytotrophoblast proliferate rapidly during the first trimester of pregnancy. During this time they also differentiate to become part of the syncytiotrophoblast layer that fuses and becomes the layer of the placenta that comes into contact with the maternal blood. Additionally, cytotrophoblast cells differentiate to become part of the extravillous trophoblast, the cells that invade into the mother’s endometrium, seeking out her spiral arteries
