Schematic diagram of the pathogenetic effects of AGEs. AGEs could damage cellular structures via formation of cross-links between key molecules in the basement membrane of the extracellular matrix. The interaction with the cell membrane receptor RAGE induces intracellular inflammation and apoptosis. The circulating receptor for AGEs (sRAGE) acts as decoy by binding the circulating AGEs, thus conferring a potential protective role
