MUC1 gene expression by epithelial cells. Cells were stimulated for 24 h with 1 μg/ml O55:B5 E. coli LPS, luteal phase steroid concentrations (5 ng/ml progesterone; 0.3 pg/ml oestradiol) or follicular phase steroid concentrations (0.5 ng/ml progesterone, 3 pg/ml oestradiol) alone or in combination, as indicated. mRNA was quantified as described in Materials and Methods, and the data presented as fold change relative to gene expression in control cells (n = 3).
